Sessions on Anna Maria
Old-Florida cottages, the pier, and the Sandlot version of a beach week
Anna Maria Island, FL
No. 01 — In Alle's words
Anna Maria has a different feeling than the Sarasota keys — older, slower, more cottage than condo. The whole island is technically three towns: Anna Maria proper at the north end, Holmes Beach in the middle, and Bradenton Beach at the south. They each photograph a little differently and I tend to choose based on the family's vibe.
Bean Point, at the very north tip of Anna Maria, is my favorite spot on the island. Turquoise water on three sides, a wide curl of beach that catches sunset directly, and almost no condos in sight. It's a 10-minute walk from the nearest parking, which keeps the crowds down. I bring a soft bag of snacks for the walk if there are little ones — the payoff is worth it.
The Anna Maria City Pier was rebuilt in 2020 and is now one of the prettiest pier sessions on the Gulf — fresh wood, perfect golden light against the water. Lovely for engagements, families, and anniversary sessions. Sunset there is always full of people but the pier itself is wide enough that we can work around them.
Holmes Beach in the middle is the most family-friendly stretch — bigger beach accesses, easier parking, good for families with strollers or grandparents along. Bradenton Beach at the south end has the Bridge Street pier and a slightly more lively, end-of-vacation vibe.
If you're picturing the Sandlot version of a Florida beach week — pastel cottages, golf carts, kids in linen running toward the water — Anna Maria is the island for you. Drive time from Sarasota is about 35–40 minutes via the Cortez Bridge.
